Yale C. Hanks

YORK Yale C. Hanks, 96, died at 8:10 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the York Lutheran Home at Sprenkle Drive. He was the loving husband of Miriam L. (Cogan) Hanks who died December 9, 2005. Yale and Miriam shared 68 years of marriage. They were avid travelers, journeying to 48 states, Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Europe. Born in Yonkers, NY, Yale was the son of the late George Albert and Viola (Akers) Hanks. After being orphaned at age 4, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Lulu and John Wallace with his two brothers, Max and Webster Wallace. In the Army during World War II, Yale served on Leyte Island, the Philippines, and with the Occupation Forces in Japan, achieving the rank of First Sergeant of the 24th Corps, Headquarters Company. He was discharged in 1946. Upon returning from the war, Yale worked at the former York Trust Company before joining the Bon Ton Corporation where he was in various executive capacities for 47 years. For eighteen of those years, Yale was Secretary Treasurer of a Bon Ton Subsidiary, Eyerly’s Department Store in Hagerstown, MD. Yale’s many community activities in York and Hagerstown include serving as past president of the York Exchange Club, on the Boards of Directors of the York Chamber of Commerce and the York Family Service Agency. Yale was also a lifetime member of the VFW Post 7374, a member of the York Stamp Collectors Club and the National Philatelic Society. Yale is survived by two daughters, Anita Kovach and husband, the Reverend David of York, and Nancy Bushey of Hagerstown, MD; and a son, John Ritter and wife, Debbie of Myrtle Beach, SC. He has also been blessed with seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A brother, Wade and two sisters, Thelma and Vermeda have pre-deceased Yale. Following cremation, at Yale’s request, there will be a light-hearted, humorous celebration of Yale’s rich, full life at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 1551 Kenneth Rd., York on Friday, June 28, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. A visitation with the family will be from 1 to 2 p.m. At the convenience of the family, Yale’s remains will be interred at Shreve’s Chapel in Clearville, PA where he spent his youth. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, please make a donation in memory of Yale’s wife, Miriam to the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater PA, 3544 N. Progress Ave., Suite 205, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
