York--William Wharton Wiles, 91, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2023 at his residence in Windsor Township. Bill has he was known to colleagues, friends and family, was born June 9, 1931, in Knoxville, Tennessee, the son of the late James and Sally May (Wharton) Wiles. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lessley (Decker) Wiles; one son, Ken Wiles (Debbie) and granddaughters, Cameron Wharton and Lauren McKenzie Wiles all of Austin, TX. In addition, he is survived by 4 nieces and nephews, 5 great nieces and nephews and 6 great-great nieces and nephews and 3 cousins and their wives. He was preceded in death by his sister, Laura Elizabeth Spilman of Cookeville, TN.
Bill graduated from Murray State College (KY) in 1953, briefly attended Vanderbilt University and received his MBA from the University of Kentucky in 1959.
Bill served in the United States Army Counter Intelligence Corp during the Korean War.
Bill and Lessley were married in Owensboro, KY on August 20, 1961 and moved to Madison, WI for him to pursue a PhD in economics.
In 1964 Bill served a summer internship with the Federal Reserve Board of Governors and in 1965 became a full-time economist with the them named Banking Market Unit. Over the next 40 years he served the organization in many increasingly responsible positions culminating with his promotion to Secretary of the Board of Governors, a position he held until he retired, May 31, 1998.
In May 2002, Bill and Lessley moved to York, from Arlington, VA where they had resided for 37 years.
Dr. Wiles received may awards during his lifetime including, Who’s Who among High School Students, Who’s Who in America, 2001 Outstanding Alumnus of Murry State, and the 2002 Mayor’s award for Excellence in Achievement from Owensboro, KY.
He was a Life Member of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association.
A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be 11:00AM, Friday June 9, 2023 at Prospect Hill Cemetery. Officiating the service will be Certified Celebrant Amy M. Favorito. Anyone attending the service is asked to use the Pennsylvania Ave entrance of the cemetery. A viewing will be held from 6:00 – 8:00PM, Thursday June 8, 2023 at Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion.
In lieu of flowers, Bill requests that contributions may be made to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, 56501 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, Utah 84741 or SPCA, 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, York, Pa 17406.
