DOVER- William W. “Bill” Shroyer, Jr. died on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. He was the husband of Edith M. (Bulk) Shroyer to whom he was married for more than 69 years.
Born on October 23, 1930 he was the son of the late William W. and Thelma R. (Kahley) Shroyer, Jr. and the grandson of the late John and Jessie Kahley.
Bill was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church and Fidelis Class for more than 50 years. He was a retired York City Firefighter with more than 27 years of service. Bill also retired from The Bon Ton Department Stores after 28 years, with the last few years as a maintenance supervisor. Bill proudly served his country for almost four years in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
Bill was an avid NFL football fan and loved his Washington Commanders. Bill’s other interest was the American Civil War. He enjoyed reading about and studying the Civil War, mainly the Battle of Gettysburg. Bill enjoyed touring Civil War battlefields and going to battle reenactments. He was a member of the York Civil War Roundtable, The Gettysburg Foundation and the York County History Center. Bill was also a member of the York City Retired Fire Fighters Association.
Along with his wife, Edith, Bill is survived by two sons, Larry A. Shroyer and his wife, Dawn of York and Kevin E. Shroyer of Forest, VA; one daughter, Lisa A. Drawbaugh and her husband, Kevin of York; three granddaughters, Denise Waughtel and her husband, James of York, Diane Wales and her husband, Tom of Dover and Kolby Fitzgerald and her husband, Samuel of Lynchburg, VA; one great grandson, Tyler Wales of Dover; and one great granddaughter, Lyla Fitzgerald of Lynchburg, VA. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Korinne Shroyer; three brothers, John Shroyer, Gary Innerst and Bernard Bankert; and one sister, Joyce Morisi.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Zion United Methodist Church, 1030 Carlisle Rd., York with the Reverend Kevin T. Shively officiating. A viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be private in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Zion United Methodist Church, 1030 Carlisle Ave., York, Pa 17404.
