William J. Kauffman

YORK - William J. "Bill" Kauffman, 84, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2009 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Esther I. (Crouse) Kauffman to whom he was married for 65 years on July 29, 2009. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 947 North George Street, York with her pastor, The Rev. Beth A. Schlegel officiating. A viewing will be held from 10-11:00 AM Wednesday at the Church. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery with full military rites provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York is in charge of arrangements. Born April 26, 1925 in York, a son of the late Paul L. and Hilda M. (Dherit) Kauffman, he was a 1943 graduate of North York High School. Mr. Kauffman retired in 1987 from Local 229 IBEW electricians union after 20 years of service and had also worked for Reichard Electric. He was a member of Izaak Walton League where he received an "Appreciation Award" for his dedication to their club, and was active with Liberty Social Club, Liberty Fire Co., Hawks Gunning Club; and St. Peter's Lutheran Church where he sang on the Church choir and served as treasurer of the Sunday School for many years. Bill was a talented craft maker and enjoyed preparing items for each holiday. He also loved spending time in his flower gardens, trout fishing, and archery and rifle hunting. He will be remembered for his generosity and always being available to help other people. Mr. Kauffman was a US Navy veteran of WWII. In addition to his wife, Mr. Kauffman is survived by a daughter, Connie I. and husband Richard Emswiler of North York; two sons, James E. and wife Christine Kauffman of Dover and Ronald J. and wife Mary Anne Kauffman of York New Salem; eight grandchildren, Nichole, Noelle, Anthony, Michael, Paul, Monique, Danielle, and Janae; 12 great grandchildren, Tanner, Keith, Zachary, Brianna, Zaria, Marissa, Josh, Jared, Jackson, Marley Jo, Caitlin, and Piper; and a sister, Betty J. Kondoudis of Fairview Heights, IL. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul H. Kauffman. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 947 N. George St., York, PA 17404 or to York Cancer Patient Help Fund, 25 Monument Rd., Suite 194, York, PA 17403.
