William H. Smith

DOVER – William H. Smith, 92, passed away on Friday, October 6, 2023 at WellSpan York Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Vivian (Stine) Smith. Mr. Smith was born May 23, 1931 in Shrewsbury to the late Russell and Florence Smith.


Mr. Smith was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Jefferson Ave., York. He had worked for New Penn Motor Express as a truck driver, and retired as a member of the Teamsters Local 430. He served in the Army, 25th Infantry Division in Korea from 1950 to 1953. with the rank of Corporal, he was awarded the Korean Service Ribbon with two Bronze Stars. He was also an All American District 21 Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander for York, Franklin, and Adams Counties. He was a life member of the West Manchester Township Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 7374 and a past VFW Allstate Commander, Allstate Quartermaster, and served on many committees. He served on the credential Committee for the Department of PA, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a life member of the Military Order of Cooties, Commander and Quartermaster of Pup Tent 45 MOC. He was a life member of Shiloh American Legion 791, and past Adjutant, life member of the Dover Fish and game Assoc. where he served as the Secretary and was on the Board of Directors. He was also the past president, and board of directors, and member of the York Pointer Setter Club, and an associate member of the fraternal of Police. He was also apart of Prince A.A. Club, South End Democratic Club, and he was a Hunter Safety Instructor for the Pennsylvania Game Commission.


Mr. Smith is survived by a step son, Jim Gebhart and his wife Kendra; a daughter in law, Sue McLaughlin; eight grandchildren, Denise Gebhart, David Gentzler, Eric Grey, Tracy Tefft, Kelly Gebhart, William Gebhart, Laura Pleake, and Jennifer Clemens. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Smith is preceded in death by a step daughter, Judy Mays; a step son, Tom Gebhart, a brother, Roland Smith; two sisters, Phyllis Orwig, and Charlotte Kochenhour; and his companion, Virginia Harris.


A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held 10:00 AM on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc. 1551 Kenneth Road, York. Burial will follow at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Viewings will be held from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 and from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM on Thursday, prior to the service.
