West Union, W.Va—William H. Cowan, 88, entered into Heaven, Tuesday October 24, 2017 at his residence in West Union, West Virginia. He was a devoted husband for 56 years to the late Mildred D. “Millie” (Bixler) Cowan who passed away October 6, 2009. A Celebration of Life Service will be 1:30PM, Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York. Officiating the service will be the Rev. Fred Nowell of York Church of Christ. Viewings will be held from 6-8PM, Wednesday and from 12:30-1:30PM Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Mt. Rose Cemetery with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Cowan was born June 16, 1929 in Lykens, Dauphin Co. He was the son of the late Edgar G. and Mary K. (Smith) Cowan. He was a 1949 graduate of Lykens High School and served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952. He obtained the rank of Corporal and saw action at Heartbreak Ridge in Korea with the 2nd Division. He was the former owner of P&H Distributors in York which he started in 1969 and later, in 1980, purchased PW Strickland. He continued to operate both companies until his retirement in 2002, when he sold the business to his son. He was a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and was a member of the W. York VFW Post 8951. Mr. Cowan is survived by his two sons, Eric Cowan and his wife, Debra of York and David Cowan and his wife, Rebecca of Thomasville; his daughter, Susan Kraft and her husband, Clifford of West Union, WV; a grandson, Jesse Cowan and two great grandchildren, Quentin and Jordan. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margie Thomas and Kathryn Costello and three brothers, Robert, Edgar II and David Cowan. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to SPCA, 3159 N. Susquehanna Trail, York, Pa 17406 or Heartland Hospice, 3417 Concord Rd, Suite C, York Pa 17402.
