William E. Barefoot

York—William E. Barefoot, 84, died Friday, January 8, 2010 at Pleasant Acres Nursing Home. He was the husband of Dorothy F. (Hagens) Barefoot, with whom he celebrated 59 years of marriage on July 3rd, 2009. A funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at York Alliance Church, 501 Rathton Rd, York, with his pastors, the Rev. Timothy L. Shuey and the Rev. Allen J. Lingenfelter, officiating. Viewings will be from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, and from 9 to 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at the church. Burial will be held in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc, 1551 Kenneth Rd, York, is in charge of arrangements. Born June 28, 1925 in Windber, he was a son of the late Mildred (Miller) and Russell J. Barefoot Sr. He graduated from Ebensburg High School and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946. In 1948 he started working with GE in Syracuse, NY. By 1950 he began working with Glen L. Martin and in 1952 took a job at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. His 30 year career in Civil Service began in 1953 with the Naval Ordinance Plant and was later transferred to the Naval Supply Depot, where he retired from in 1981. He earned Life Scout in Troop 85 Ebensburg in 1942, and also received his amateur radio license W3UQJ in 1951. He was a member of the American Amateur Radio Relay League, founding and life member of the Keystone VHF Amateur Radio Club-York, member of the Quarter Century Wireless Assoc., life member of both the York Riflemen Gun Club and NRA, member of the York Alliance Church, served as Asst. Scoutmaster Troop 19-York and was a member of the York Area Radio Control Airplane Club. In addition to his wife, Mr. Barefoot is also survived by one son, Timothy W. Barefoot and his wife, Sandi of Dover, one daughter, Penny L. Espenshade of Elizabethtown, 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, two brothers, Richard Barefoot of South Carolina, Russell Barefoot Jr, of Ebensburg, one sister, Judy (Barefoot) Murphy of Lantana, Fla, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel and Bernard Barefoot. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Great Commission Fund, In Memory of William E.
