William A. Engstrand

York—William A. Engstrand, 75, passed away, Friday, September 4, 2009 at his residence in Windsor Township. He was the husband of Wanda Sue (Martin) Engstrand, to whom he was married for 55 years. The family will be receiving friends to celebrate Mr. Engstrand's life, 6 p.m., Friday, September 11, 2009, at their residence. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Life Tributes by Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc, 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion, is in charge of arrangements. Born July 25, 1934 in Minneapolis, MN, he was a son of the late William C. and Genevieve E. (Thorson) Engstrand. He graduated from Hickman High School and earned his master's degree in education from the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. He also served in the United States Marine Corps for 3 years and was honorably discharged in 1957. He started his career of working with children as a teacher/assistant principal at Boys Town of Missouri, in St. James, MO. Later, he became Assistant Director at Andrus Children's Home in Yonkers, NY and finally was employed with the Children's Home of York as their Group Home Coordinator. A member and past president of East York Optimist Club, he was also a member of Eastern York County Baseball for Boys board of directors, Yorklyn Baseball for Boys board member and coach and a member of Contact York. In addition to his wife, Mr. Engstrand is also survived by two sons, William P. Engstrand and Gregory S. Engstrand, both of York, one grandson, Zackary S. Curry of Hallsville, MO, and one great grandson, Caleb, two brothers, James and Jay Engstrand, both of Minneapolis, MN, three sisters, Barbara Farrand and Donna Chatterfield, both of San Diego, CA, and Judy Bawek of Red Wing, MN, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Engstrand. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Patient Help Fund, 25 Monument Rd, Suite 194, York, Pa 17403 or Compassionate Care Hospice, 2449 S. Queen St., York, Pa 17402.
