Walton Brown Hill

Walton B. Hill, 96, recently of Williamsport, formerly of Springfield, Delaware County, died Saturday, October 30, 2010, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law. Born June 12, 1914, in Girardville, PA, he was the eldest of six children born to Walter B. and Ruth Brown Hill, and spent his early years in Shamokin. His wife of 63 years, the former Marie Helene Savidge, preceded him in death on January 3, 2000. He was also predeceased by his brother Peter William Hill of Mansfield, PA and his sister Lillian Ruth Hardison of Salem NJ. He received a Bachelor's degree from Bloomsburg University, a Master's degree from Bucknell University, and a Doctorate in Education from Temple University in 1965. He was a lifetime educator who began his career in 1938 at Hatboro Senior High School, holding the positions of Dean of Boys at Haverford Township Senior High School, Associate Dean of Student Services at Delaware County Community College, Chairperson of Graduate Studies at West Chester State University, and various faculty and administrative positions at Pennsylvania Institute of Technology in Media, PA. For many years he coached the soccer team at Haverford High School and was recently inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame. He was active in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Mathematical Association of America, and a life member of Phi Delta Kappa and the National Education Association. He was a member and past President of the Media Chapter of Rotary International and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield PA. He is survived by his brother Thomas Richard Hill of Mansfield PA, sister Betty Jean Cooper of Fort Collins CO, sister Lois Mae Pollash of Salem VA; four children, Donna Marie Hill, of Rochester NY, Cathleen R. Hurwitz (Harold Hurwitz) of Williamsport PA, Jerri L. Hill (Charles Bucknam) of Parker CO and Walton F. Hill of Edgewater NJ; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 20, 2010 at the Oak Grove Church, Paxinos, PA with the Reverend John F. Piper officiating. Donations may be made in his name to the Media Chapter of Rotary International, P.O. Box 522, Media, PA 19063. Arrangements are being handled by the Allen & Redmond Funeral Home, 331 Elmira St., Williamsport, PA 17701.
