YORK- W. Earl Markel, 75, of Windsor Twp., passed away at home with his family by his side on Thursday morning, October 2, 2008. He was the loving husband for over 50 years of Carolyn B. (Ehrhart) Markel. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 6, 2008 at Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Pl., Red Lion. Officiating is Mr. Markel's pastor, Rev. David Tietje of St. John's United Church of Christ, Red Lion. A viewing will be from 10 to 11:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Red Lion Cemetery where the folding of the flag will be provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Born in Chanceford Twp. on October 18, 1932, a son of the late Samuel and Anna Mary (Gohn) Markel. Mr. Markel was a US Army veteran and served during the Korean Conflict. He was employed with Caterpillar as a receiving clerk for 30 years, retiring in 1990. Mr. Markel was on the Lucky Ball team and was a member of the Caterpillar Union. He was a Mall Walker and liked to go camping. Mr. Markel was an avid NASCAR fan and his favorite drivers were both Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Most of all, he loved to watch his grandson, Ryan, play baseball. In addition to his wife, Carolyn, surviving are his two daughters, Tammy S. Poff and her husband Gregg of York and Dori A. Green and her husband John of Red Lion; four grandchildren, Andrea Bortner and her husband Keith, Ryan Poff, and Lindsey and Allison Green; a great granddaughter, Madison Nicole Bortner; a brother, Dean Y. Markel and five sisters, Esther Robinson, Violet Miller, Velma Myers, Charlotte Leiphart, and Erma McDonald. He is preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Patient Help Fund, York Health Foundation, 45 Monument Rd., Ste. 200, York, PA 17403
