RED LION – Verlyn E. McCleary, 98, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at his home. He was the husband of the late Hilda E. (Seitz) McCleary. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at St. Paul Lebanon Lutheran Church, 6955 Rippling Run Road, Felton with The Rev. Timothy Seitz-Brown officiating. A viewing will be held from 6-8:00 PM Monday at Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion. A graveside service will be held at 9:00 AM Tuesday at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Friends and family are welcome to meet at 8:45 AM Tuesday at the entrance of the Cemetery for the graveside services. Born March 14, 1918 in Red Front, Springfield Twp.; a son of the late Roy A. and Nellie May (Heaps) McCleary, he was a graduate of Red Lion High School. Mr. McCleary owned and operated Lion Floor Covering Co. for 23 years until his retirement. Prior to operating his own business, Mr. McCleary was a hardware and paint salesman and buyer for Arnold Lumber Co. for 18 years. He was a member of St. Paul Lebanon Lutheran Church, Red Lion-Dallastown Rotary Club where he was a 50 year member with perfect attendance and served as secretary for 26 years, Red Lion Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1592, Izaak Walton League, Hopewell Fish & Game, Lucky Gunning Club, NRA and the former Red Lion Fish and Game Assoc. Verlyn was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a US Army veteran of WWII. Mr. McCleary is survived by a son, Keith A. and wife Nancy McCleary of Red Lion; four grandchildren, Mark E. and wife Tina Metz, Dena Metz and her late husband Steven Poff, Matthew F. and wife Terry Metz and Ryan M. and wife Karla McCleary; two great granddaughters, Kira L. and Kylie L. Poff; a brother, Robert McCleary of Delaware; son-in-law, Frederick E. and wife Nancy Metz of York; close friend, Wilma Downs; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Lyn Metz; a grandson, Ian K. McCleary; and two brothers, Clair and Dennis McCleary.
