V. Arthur Hershner

V. Arthur Hershner, 97, passed away August 18, 2010 in Cary, NC. He was the husband of the late Mildred Green Hershner and the late Mary Gerlach Hershner. Born October 3, 1912 in Cross Roads, PA, Art was the oldest son of the late Steven and Blanche (Workinger) Hershner. His family moved to the city of York, where he graduated from William Penn High School. He worked for Educators Mutual Insurance Co. as a claims adjuster, spent several years in the restaurant business, and later retired from York Truck Rental. Following his retirement, Art moved to California with his second wife Mary, where they lived until her recent death. He then moved to Cary, North Carolina to be closer to his family. Art had been a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church; served as past president of Lincolnway Lions Club; and was a life member of York Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 213. His interests included cooking, investing, music, traveling, gardening, and spending time with his family. He was avid animal lover and enjoyed the company of his sons dogs. Mr. Hershner was a US Army veteran of WWII. Art is survived by two sons, J. Michael and wife Susan Hershner of York and Lee A. and wife Millie Hershner and their children Terry, Andrew, and Melissa of Durham, NC; four stepsons, Carl and wife Sandra Gerlach, Craig Gerlach, Bob and wife Bonnie Gerlach, and Phil and wife Mary Gerlach all of California; and a stepdaughter, Pam and husband Jim Haigh of Washington; six step grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and five Golden Retriever granddogs. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. A graveside service will be held at 11:45 AM Saturday, October 23, 2010 in Prospect Hill Cemetery with Rev. Keith C. Fair officiating. Family and friends will meet at the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance of the cemetery at 11:30 AM Saturday. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York is in charge of arrangements.
