SHIPPENSBURG- Tyler James Smith, 26, passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2021. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 25 Springettsbury Ave., in York, with a visitation from 9-10 a.m. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc, in York is assisting with the arrangements. The Reverend Stanley Reep will be officiating at the service. The service will be live broadcast at HeffnerCare.com with a link on Tyler’s obituary. Tyler was born in York on October 19, 1994, the son of Stephen D. and Sylvia K. (Barshinger) Smith of York. Tyler was a deeply passionate, artistic, and creative person who often dived into his interests headfirst making sure to learn all the ins and outs. He was a 2013 graduate of York Suburban High School. During school, he started working alongside his parents and brothers in the family lawn service. After graduation he pursued a career in the culinary field. He worked as a cook for Catch 54 in Fenwick Island, DE and Longhorn Steak House in York, PA. He then went on to become a police officer and graduated from the Harrisburg Area Community College Police Academy. He worked for the Newville Police Department in 2018 before transitioning to the Shippensburg Police Department and later joined the Shippensburg University Police Department. Outside of work, he loved getting outside, exploring on multi-night camping and hiking treks, boating around Ocean City with his family and friends, and caring for his dogs, Lily and Ruby. Along with his parents, he leaves his fiancée, Maaha Irfan Butt; two brothers, Chad B. Smith and his wife Kristin of Baltimore and Christopher R. Smith and his wife Jennifer of Mt. Wolf; a nephew, Jackson; and two nieces, Aubrey and Riley. He was preceded in death by a sister, Stephanie N. Smith, and his grandparents, Monte and Barbara Smith, and Emory and Lorie Barshinger.
