York—Thomas L. Quickel, 83, died Friday, March 14, 2008 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Miriam R. (Stough) Quickel to whom he was married for 61 years. A celebration of life service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at Saint Paul Lutheran Church, 250 Trinity Rd, York, with his pastors, the Revs. Paul W. and Sara A. Gausmann officiating. A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the church. Burial will be held in St. Paul's (Wolf's) Union Cemetery with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Quickel was born November 30, 1924 in Saginaw, Michigan, a son of David M. and Jennie Eve (Heltzel) Quickel. He was a 1943 graduate of Dover Area High School. Shortly after graduating he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and served with the 15th Air Force out of Foggia, Italy. During his service he earned several awards including a Purple Heart and Air Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters. He was discharged in 1945 and spent 3 years with the United States Air Force Reserves. He was employed with Cole Steel for 39 years and retired as a Manufacturing Supervisor in 1988. Following his retirement, he worked with Verizon for 12 years. A member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church, where he participated as, Sunday school church superintendent, secretary of the church council and served on 3 funding efforts for church construction. He was also active with the Boy Scouts at Saint Paul and the Cub Scouts at Lincolnway School. He enjoyed playing billiards, cards, doing puzzles, playing on the computer and was an avid reader. In addition to his wife, Mr. Quickel is also survived by two sons, Rev. Thomas L. Quickel Jr., of Bristol, Tenn., and Ray E. Quickel of York, three grandchildren, Andrea M. Tomes, Mark Thomas Quickel and Daniel P. Quickel, one great-grandson, Grant Thomas Tomes, one brother, David Quickel Jr., of Dover, two sisters, Marian Henry and Grace Geisler both of York and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 1 brother and 5 sisters. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to York Cancer Center, 25 Monument Rd, Suite 194, York, Pa 17403 or Saint Paul Lutheran Church, 250 Trinity Rd., York, Pa 17404.
