Thomas J. Ryan, Jr.

DOVER- Thomas J. Ryan, Jr., 88, of Dover Township passed away Saturday, November 13, 2021, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Peggy J. (Cox) Ryan. Mr. Ryan was born in Harrisburg on December 18, 1932, the son of the late Thomas J. Ryan, Sr, and Esther (Lehmer) Ryan. Mr. Ryan leaves two sons, Thomas B. Ryan of York and Kirk E. Ryan, spouse Karen, of Lewisberry; daughter, Kim Flaharty, spouse Barry, of York; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren, and a sister, Iris Shover of Lemoyne. Mr. Ryan’s greatest accomplishment was being the Founder and CEO of Motor Technology, Inc. in York. In 1981, he opened MTI’s doors with only five employees. Mr. Ryan’s belief that employees come first has led to MTI's continued success. Mr. Ryan took great pride in getting to know each and every employee. Employees remember Mr. Ryan showing up to work “every morning with his briefcase and a smile.” Even in his 80s, Mr. Ryan continued to greet and “talk shop” with as many employees as possible each morning as he walked through the offices and shop. Employees also remember Mr. Ryan for his generosity. Not only did MTI donate to various local organizations, but Mr. Ryan, personally, gave to his employees that were in need of help monetarily, legally, and emotionally. Mr. Ryan took great care to make sure each employee felt valued. Mr. Ryan’s legacy lives on not only through his family, but also through his employees that he loved and treated as family. Mr. Ryan served in the US Navy. He was a member of EASA, and he served as a chapter President from 1975-1976. Mr. Ryan donated to many local charities, such as the food banks, and national charities, like St. Jude Children’s Hospital. A celebration of life memorial service will be held in the spring.
