SCRANTON- Thomas A. Johnson, 49, formerly of Avoca, of Scranton died Friday at home. He was born in Pittson on Arpil 18, 1959, he was the son of the late James J. Jr. and Grace (Collins) Johnson. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army serving in the Airborne Infantry Division. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Avoca. Tom formerly served with the Avoca Police Department and was promoted to Chief of Police in October of 1987 till 1994. He also worked undercover for Luzerne County Sheriff's Department and security at the Steamtown Mall, Scranton. He is survived by three daughters, Jennifer Pawlikowski, Moosic, Bettina Johnson, Dublin, VA, Christine Johnson, Moosic, three grandchildren, Tyler James and Mackenzie Pawlikowski, Kayla Johnson, one brother, Robert, Chicago, IL, seven sisters, Elizabeth Bryer, Titusville, Fl, Mary Cary, Duryea, Patricia Mehalchick, Wyoming, Joan Johnson, Concrete, WA, Grace Marie Johnson, Scranton, Judith Barkowski, Titusville, Fl, Dororthy Johnson, W.Pittson, several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, James Johnson III and twin granddaughters, Eva Marie and Gabrielle Elizabeth Johnson. The Funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9:30AM from Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 728 Main Street, Avoca, with Mass of Christian Burial be celebrated at 10:00AM in St. Mary's Church, Avoca, with Father Phillip J. Sladicka officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call from Monday from 5:00PM to 8:00PM at the funeral home.
