WILLIAMSPORT - Thelma S. (Hughes) Clipper, 90 of Walnut Street, passed away Friday, evening, July 8, 2011 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 3, 1920 in Williamsport a daughter of the late Lawrence and Edna (Brown) Hughes. Thelma was married 64 years to John Clipper, II who died January 18, 2002. She retired from Shop-Vac as a supervisor after many years. Thelma was a member of Salem Zion A.M.E. Church. She was a founding member of the NAACP. She was also a member of the West Branch Human Relation Commission. Thelma was know for helping people especially neighbors and her favorite saying was “ Is there anything I can do for you, is there anything you need?” She also enjoyed spending time with her family. Thelma served in the Army during WW II. She was the first black woman from Lycoming County to enlist in the Woman’s Army Auxiliary Corps. Surviving are one son John Clipper, III and his wife Joan of Allentown, two daughters Lucille Evans of Williamsport and China Neal of Anaheim, CA Eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. One brother Harry Hughes of Bloomsburg survives her. Thelma was preceded in death by a son Edward, two brothers Lawrence and James and also a sister Edna Moore. The funeral service will be held 11:00 A.M., Friday, July 15, 2011 at the Allen & Redmond Funeral Home, 331 Elmira Street, with Rev. Willie Anderson and the Rev. Dorothy Anderson officiating. There will be a public viewing on Friday from 10:00 – 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Wildwood Cemetery.
