Steve M. Cookie" Cooke

YORK - Steve M. "Cookie" Cooke, 61, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Lebanon VA Medical Center. He was the husband of Leslie K. (Foust) Cooke to whom he was married for 13 years. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 5:00 PM Monday, March 22, 2010 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York with Full Military Rites provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. A visitation will be held from 4-5:00 PM Monday at the Funeral Chapel. Mr. Cooke was born on September 15, 1948 in Niagara Falls, NY, a son of Mildred Jane (Shimel) Gholson of West York and the late Jesse Cooke, and stepson of the late William Gholson; he had owned Cooke's Sharpening Service until his retirement in 2008. He was nationally known as "The Sharpening Guy" and was renowned for sharpening and restoring hand saws. Prior to owning his sharpening service, he worked at the former Ramclif Supply Co. Steve was a member of Viking Athletic Assoc., West York VFW Post 8951, and Rangers Social Club in Baltimore. Cookie was an avid golfer and loved riding Harley Davidson motorcycles. Steve was a Deep Sea Diver for the US Navy and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1988 after 21 years of service. In addition to his wife and mother, Steve is survived by a daughter, Stephanie M. Cooke of Dover; two sons, Steven M. Cooke, Jr. of Greenville, NC and Sean and wife Cara Cooke of Virginia Beach, VA; four stepsons, Tommy M. Cooke of Portsmouth, VA, Christopher F. and wife Liz Mann of Norfolk, VA, and twins, Joseph P. and Nicholas C. Mann both of York; three grandchildren, Sierra and Haylee Cooke, and Connor Nicklas; a brother, David and wife Sandi Gholson of West York; a sister, Joyce Wild; a sister in law, Deborah D. Foust of Etters; a brother in law, Richard P. Foust, Jr. and wife Sandy of Thomasville; and his family dogs, Daisy, Sheba, and Oscar. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Patrick and Bill Gholson. A memorial bench will be installed at Briarwood East Golf Course in memory of Steve "Cookie" Cooke. The family requests memorial donations be made to the "Steve Cooke Memorial Bench Fund," c/o Briarwood Golf Course, 4775 West Market Street, York, PA 17408.
