Stanley D. Counterman

Stanley D. Counterman, 84, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Saturday evening, December 1, at Hampton House, Hanover Twp, PA. Born in Carbondale, PA on February 16, 1923, he was a son of the late David and Ada (Swingle) Counterman. He was a graduate of Meyers High School and served in the US Army, 70th Infantry Division, during WWII in the European Theater including the Battle of the Bulge. Stanley was the Quality Control Manager and President - CEO of Atwater Throwing Company locations on South Main Street, and Blackman Street, Wilkes-Barre and Plymouth, PA. Stanley will be deeply missed by the members of Firwood United Methodist Church where he taught the adult Sunday school class, was a member of the Administrative Council, Honorary Trustee for Life, Church Treasurer for over 50 years, former Treasurer of Sunday School, former Chairman Pastor of parish relations committee and chairman of the outreach committee. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid fisherman. He will be missed by his fishing partner, Glenn Garrison. Stanley often provided friends with vegetables from his garden and the fish he had caught. Stanley was preceded in death by his wife, the former Madelyn Nichols in 1999; brother, Harold; and sisters, Phyllis Houser and Evelyn Counterman. He was a great role model and father to his children; sons Wayne and his wife Nancy, Wellsville, NY, Paul and his wife Barbara, Averill Park, NY, Raymond and his wife Judith, Canton, MA, Craig, Wakefield, MA; daughter Carolyn Elias, New Oxford, PA; He is also survived by his grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Damon, David, Elizabeth, Abigail, James, Michael, Kevin, Christopher, and Jennifer. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Firwood United Methodist Church, Old River Road and Dagobert Sts, Wilkes-Barre with Reverend Doug Posegate officiating. Friends may call Tuesday at Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 465 South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre from 6-9 PM. Viewing will also take place prior to the service Wednesday at Firwood United Methodist from 9:00 AM until time of service.
