FAYETTEVILLE, PA – Spurgeon E. Markle, 89, formerly of York and Ortanna, PA; passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at Village of Laurel Run. He was the husband of Bertha J. (Heiland) Markle to whom he was married for 67 years. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, February 3, 2012 at Prospect Hill Cemetery with The Rev. Kenneth R.W. Reid officiating. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 AM at the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance of the cemetery. Full military rites will be provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York is in charge of arrangements. Born September 28, 1922 in York, a son of the late Harry H. and Cora Ann (Messersmith) Markle, he had retired from Pennsylvania Electrotype in York after 34 years of service. He was a member of Biglerville American Legion, West York VFW, Buchanan Valley Rod and Gun Club; and enjoyed spending time outdoors. Mr. Markle was a US Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. In addition to his wife Bertha, Mr. Markle is survived by a close nephew, Harry “Sonny” Markle, III of York and additional nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Roger “Bud” Markle, Charles “Abe” Markle, and Harry and Jack Markle.
