Pottsville- Sophie M. Eckley, 94, of Pottsville, passed away peacefully on Saturday at Schuylkill Medical Center, South Jackson Street, Pottsville, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Pottsville on June 15, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Emma DeAngeles Samay. Sophie owned and operated a greenhouse on Peacock Street in Pottsville for many years with her husband. She retired after working for Pottsville Mills for 30 years. Sophie was a member of the former Saint Joseph Church, Pottsville. Most recently she was a member of Saint Patrick's Church, Pottsville. Sophie resided with her son, Joe, for over 30 years and enjoyed being visited by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her family was her greatest joy in her life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, who passed away in 1978; her brother, Francis Samay; her five sisters, Esther Ennis, Anna Grickis, Theresa Choman, Phyllis Moran and Thomasine Ginther. Sophie is survived by her two sons, Henry Eckley, husband of Margaret, of Pottsville, and Joseph Eckley, husband of Cornelia "Cookie", of Pottsville; her seven grandchildren, Christopher Eckley, Brian Eckley, husband of Susan, Stephen Eckley, Joseph Eckley, husband of Lisa, Anthony Eckley, husband of Marlisa, Dominick Eckley, husband of Aimee, and Dean Eckley, husband of Angie; her ten Great Grandchildren, Matthew, Jayne, Taylor, Nicole, Kyle, Beau, Neiko, Faith, Logan and Emma Eckley; her brother, Joseph Samay, of Philadelphia; several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday morning at 10:00 A.M. at Saint Patrick's Church, 400 Mahantongo Street, Pottsville. Friends may call on Wednesday evening from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Schlitzer-Allen-Pugh Funeral Home, Inc., 6th & West Market Streets, Pottsville, and also on Thursday morning from 9:00 A.M. until time of Mass at the church. Interment will be held in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Hillside, Pottsville. Memorial donations may be made to Saint Patrick's Church Memorial Fund, 319 Mahantongo Street, Pottsville, PA 17901. Donations will be accepted both Wednesday evening at the funeral home and Thursday morning at the church. Online condolences may be sent to bestlifetributes.com.
