Shirley (Medley) Walker

WILKES-BARRE-Shirley M. Walker was born in Wilkes-Barre on January 1, 1936, to the late William L. and Lillian M. (McCloe) Medley. Shirley was united in marriage to Alfonzo Walker of New York. They remained happily married for 57 years, until she peacefully transitioned into eternal life on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She graduated high school from G.A.R. and worked as a clerk for the Liquor Control Board, and a teachers assistant in the Wilkes-Barre School District. Shirley was baptized into the faith at Mount Zion Baptist church and was a former member of New Covenant Christian Fellowship Church. At the time of her death, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Wilkes-Barre on River Street. She was a faithful servant and active volunteer in the community; working with such groups as Ruths Place, VISION and M-25, a homeless ministry. She also served as a member of the Deaconess Board and Choir. She also had a passionate love for attending Bible study and prayer meetings. In her leisure time, she enjoyed sitting on the porch and working in her home and yard. Shirley was known for her loving kindness and sense of humor. Her favorite time of all was spent enjoying her loving family and traveling. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Mrs. Katherine Long; her brother, Morris L. Medley; her sister, Rachel; her brothers-in-law Harold Murray and Frank Thornton; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Medley and Martha Medley. Shirley leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her precious memories of their life together, her loving husband, Alfonzo Walker, Sr.; her sons, Alfonzo Walker, Jr., Duane W. Walker and his fiance, Gena of Virginia; Morris J. Walker and his wife, Mary Jane of Wilkes-Barre; Kirk D. Walker and his wife, Judy of Drums; grandchildren Dwane (Norma Jean) Walker and Nathaniel Walker of Virginia; the Reverend Shawn (Sharida) Walker of Wilkes-Barre; Brandon (Shana) Walker of Wilkes-Barre; Kirk D. Walker, II and Angelique Walker of Drums; step grandchildren Khayla Griffiths and McKenna Griffiths of Wilkes-Barre; great-grandchildren Brandon Walker, Cole Walker, Lael Walker and Brody Walker of Wilkes-Barre and Marcia Walker of Virginia; step great-grandson, Brandon Farmer, Jr. of Wilkes-Barre; brothers and sisters Rebecca Murray, Dorothy Thornton, William Medley, Charles (Rayetta) Medley, Charlene Jenkins, all of Wilkes-Barre; Estelle McGoy of Virginia; the Reverend John Medley of California and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, February 21, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Wilkes-Barre, 48 South River Street, Wilkes-Barre. Shirleys grandson, the Reverend Shawn Walker will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to Kniffen OMalley Funeral Home, Inc., 465 South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre.
