Shirley M. Clugston

WILLIAMSPORT-Shirley Marie (Beury) Clugston, of York, passed away peacefully, December 26, 2015 at the Williamsport Home, Williamsport, PA where she was a recent resident to reside closer to her daughter. Shirley was born in Sunbury on September 8, 1923 to the late LaRoy D. and Carrie B. (Young) Beury. She was a graduate of Northumberland High School where she played the trombone in the band. As well as her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 62 years, John R. Clugston, her sister Betty Stahl and her husband Roland and her brother in law Russell Clugston. Before marriage she worked at Weis Markets in Northumberland. Being a wife and mother was Shirley’s calling. Mrs. Clugston was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in York, a life member of Devers Lions Auxiliary where she held many offices. She was a member of the Met-Ed Company York Area Retirees Association, a Life Member of PTA, and a member of William Penn Band Parents, Shiloh Garden Club, and Eastern Star. She delivered Meals on Wheels with her husband. She worked at the polling place on Election Day for many years. She spent many mornings reading stories at the York Blind Center. She was a member of York Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered for the Red Cross. Mrs. Clugston loved music and liked to dance. She enjoyed playing cards/games, the beach, traveling, volunteering, shopping and especially time spend with her grandsons. Mrs. Clugston is survived by a son, John L. Clugston and his wife, Karen L. of Ogden, UT; a daughter, Jan C. Muthler and her husband, Daniel J. of Jersey Shore, PA; two grandsons, Joshua D. Clugston, of Northfield, MN and Jason M. Clugston and his wife, Shannon M. of Ogden, UT; a step grandson, D. Bryan Muthler and his wife, Christine E. of Columbia, NC; two great-grandchildren, Jack R. and Elin M. Clugston; three step great-grandchildren, Nathaniel J., Evelyn N. and Ezrah F. Muthler; a sister Virginia Beury Gallo and her husband, Joseph, sister-in-law, Myrtle Clugston, and numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Service will be held January 5, 2016 at Calvary United Methodist Church, 11 N. Richland Ave. in York. The Reverend Dr. B. Michael Brossman and The Reverend Roland E. Garvin will be officiating at the service. A viewing will be held from 9:30-11 a.m. at the church, with the service at 11 a.m. A time of gathering and meal will immediately follow the service at the church. Graveside Committal Service will be held following the meal at 2 p.m. in Prospect Hill Cemetery in York. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church, 11 N.
