Shirley J. (Snell) Smeltzer

RED LION – Shirley J. (Snell) Smeltzer, 80, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at York Hospital. She was the wife of Gene K. Smeltzer to whom she was married for 61 years. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, October 31, 2016 at Bethlehem Stonepile United Methodist Church, 250 Bethlehem Church Road, Red Lion with her Pastor, The Rev. Thomas R. Osenbach officiating. A viewing will be held from 11AM - 1:00 PM Monday at the Church. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. Born December 10, 1935 in Bittersville, a daughter of the late Edward and Carrie (Tome) Snell and stepdaughter to the late Benjamin C. Snell, she was a 1953 graduate of Red Lion Area High School. Mrs. Smeltzer had worked for Oliver Corp. in York, Eastern York School District and retired from Wellspan, Inc. She was a faithful and active member of Bethlehem Stonepile U.M. Church where she was a member of United Methodist Women and, along with her husband, spent 15 years running the Bethlehem Stonepile Springvale Covenant Food Pantry. Shirley also volunteered at Manor Care and tutored at Pleasant View Elementary School. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smeltzer is survived by a son, Tracey G. and wife Joan Smeltzer of York; a daughter, Rev. Kathy Harvey Nelson and husband Hillary Nelson of Hellam; and five grandchildren, Courtney and Benjamin Harvey, Carrie, Katie and Richard Smeltzer. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Rock A.
