Shirley Ann Stake

Shirley Ann (Matava) Stake, 79, of Jacobus, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, May 18, 2024 at York Hospital with her daughter, Vicki, by her side. She was the wife of Philip A. Stake who died May 28, 2016 and with whom she would have observed a 60th wedding anniversary on April 5th.


Following a private family funeral and burial, a Celebration of Life Open House will be held Saturday, June 15, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Bon Air Country Club, 2287 Club House Rd., Glen Rock, PA. Family and friends are invited to come and share memories of Shirley. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, York is assisting with arrangements.


Shirley was born July 5, 1944 in McKeesport, Allegheny County. She was the daughter of the late Edward, Jr. and Hilda (Thompson) Matava.


She was a 1962 graduate of Rostraver High School in Belle Vernon, Fayette County, was a member of Salem Christian Church, Jacobus, was a long-time member of Bon Air Country Club where she was an 8-time Women’s Club Champion. She retired in 1999 as the Chief Financial Officer of Heffner Family Services after 10 years of service. She had a passion for photography (especially golf courses) and travel. Her favorite travel memories were China, Ireland, France, England, the Caribbean, and annual trips to Myrtle Beach.


Shirley is survived by her daughter, Vicki Lee Stake of New Freedom; two grandchildren, Rebekah “Reba” Mae and Aaron Philip Portner; her sister, Susan Stephens of Red Lion; her sister-in-law, Lynn Matava of Murphysboro, IL and her sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and David Seitz and Donna and Dale Orwig. She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Matava, III.
