WEST MILTON - Sarah E. “Sally” (Whitman) Smith, 86, died Sunday, January 13, 2013, at the Williamsport Home, Williamsport. She was born on December 20, 1926 in Lewisburg and was the daughter of the late Paul and Elizabeth (Stahl) Whitman. At an early age, Sally’s parents moved to Medford, MA, but she remained in Lewisburg, residing with her favorite aunt, Mary Stahl, for a number of years before moving to Massachusetts to be with her family. Sally was a graduate of the Milton Area High School. During WW II, she contributed to the war effort by working in a defense plant in Boston, MA. She married the late Jack K. Smith November 1945, in which they celebrated 56 years of marriage, until his death in 2001. After marrying Jack, they moved back to Pennsylvania, where Sally was employed for a number of years as a seamstress at Fox Knapp Manufacturing Company in Milton, and later a seamstress at the Pennsylvania House Furniture Factory in Lewisburg. Sally was a very creative and artistically talented individual who enjoyed drawing, painting, crocheting, knitting, sewing, playing the organ, growing flowers, camping, her pets, watching Eagle’s football games and spending time with her family. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law; Keith L. and Diane Smith of State College, two daughters and one son-in-law; Jaqueline M. and Earl H. Sheatler of Watsontown and Lesia C. Bird and companion Christopher Jon Spaar of Trout Run, five grandchildren; Shawn Sheatler of Baltimore MD, Cher and husband Ryan Weidner of Taneytown, MD, Angela Bird of Williamsport, Cory Bird of Montoursville and Zachery Smith of State College, two great grandchildren; Drew Weidner of Taneytown and Logan Thomas of Williamsport and one sister; Hellen Ann (Whitman) Murphy of North Las Vegas, NV. In addition to her Parents and husband, Sally was preceded in death by three brothers; George Whitman, Paul Whitman, Jr., and Wesley Whitman and seven sisters; Dorothy O'Malley, Maryellen French, Esther Jorden, Laura McLaughlin, Ruth Weeks and Rita Reid. A gathering of friends and family will take place 12:00-1:00 p.m. Monday, January 21, 2013 at The Dale E. Ranck Funeral Service, 125 N. Front Street, Milton, Followed by a funeral service at 1:00 P.M., with Pastor Ronald Savits of the Newberry Church of Christ officiating. A private burial will take place at Church Hill Cemetery, White Deer Twp., at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the S.P.C.A., 2805 Reach Road, Williamsport, PA 17701. Cemetery: Private burial at the convenience of the family.
