Sandra J. Mcelwain

YORK — Sandra J. Kabat McElwain, 67, passed away Friday, December 31, 2010 at York Hospital. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at Life Tributes by Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory Inc, 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion Pa. Viewings will be held Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 pm and Wednesday from 1:00pm preceding the service. A burial ceremony will be held at the Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. Born May 19, 1943 in Beaver Falls, PA, she was the eldest daughter of Roberta J. Majors Kabat and the late Emil A. Kabat. Mrs. McElwain graduated from Beaver Falls High School in 1961. She enrolled at Geneva College and graduated in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in English. In 1968, she earned her master’s degree in secondary education from Pennsylvania State University. She retired from Central York School District in 2001. She taught English for 38 years educating more than 4,000 students. After her retirement, she taught at the Harrisburg Area Community College. She was a member and former president of the American Business Women’s Assoc. of York, National Education Assoc., PA State Educational Assoc., Central York Educational Assoc., and the Red Hat Society. In addition to her mother, Mrs. McElwain is survived by her daughter, Michal Malur and husband Shrinath of Alexandria, VA; her son, Dr. Michael McElwain of Princeton, NJ; two sisters, Patricia Holtzapple of Red Lion, PA and Amy Mellinger of Westin, FL; and nieces and nephews.
