YORK- Samuel Ray Wertman, 86, of Spring Garden Township, died Monday, July 6, 2015 at his residence. He was the husband of Mary Ann (Yoder) Wertman. The couple celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on August 29, 2014. A Graveside service will be held on Monday, July 13, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens in York with full military honors provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Pastor Robert Lowden will be officiating at the service. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc. 1551 Kenneth Rd. in York is assisting the family with the arrangements. Mr. Wertman was born in Watsontown, Northumberland County, on November 25, 1928, the son of the late Samuel R. and Sara R. (Gambel) Wertman. He retired from Graphic Services in York and prior to that was an art teacher in the West York Area School District. Mr. Wertman was a member of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church and Lutheran Men’s Club. He was a past president of Hillcrest Lions Club, as well as a member of York County Chorus, and AARP Chapter 24. He served in the US Army in the Korean War and received a Bronze Star. Mr. Wertman leaves a son, Jeffrey R. Wertman and his wife Connie of Windsor; four daughters, Deborah A. Englar and her fiancé Jesse Samples, Sr. of Fort Mill, SC, Sharon R. Swezey and her husband Ken of Landisville, Lancaster County, Susan M. McLaughlin and her husband John of York, and Jodi Erb and her husband Wyatt of New Oxford; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. A daughter, Darlene Louise Wertman had preceded him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, 1907 Hollywood Drive, York, PA 17403.
