DALLASTOWN – Russell (Russ) R. Urey, 82, passed away Friday, January 13, 2023 at SpiriTrust Lutheran Village at Sprenkle Drive. He was the husband of Carol A. (Hummer) Urey with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage on December 22, 2022.


A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Bethany United Methodist Church, 121 W. Broadway, Red Lion with Rev. Ronald L. Doverspike and Rev. Larry Parlett officiating. A visitation will be held from 10-11:00 AM Saturday at the Church. Russ’s Tribute Service will be webcast on the Bethany Church website at www.bethanyredlion.com. Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion is in charge of arrangements.


Born March 1, 1940 in Red Lion, a son of the late George A. and Goldie (Sitler) Urey, Russ was a 1958 graduate of Red Lion Area High School and a 1962 graduate of Lebanon Valley College where he played basketball and baseball. He also earned his Master’s Degree in 1967 from the College of William & Mary. Russ was the Assistant Principal at Red Lion Area High School for 24 years until his retirement in 1995. He also taught Chemistry at Red Lion for six years prior to becoming an administrator. Russ coached track and was an assistant football coach at Red Lion during the famed 37-game winning streak from 1963 through 1967, the longest in the state at the time. He was a member of the Red Lion LEO Club, Red Lion High School Football Buddies Breakfast Club, and Bethany U.M. Church. Russ was a gifted athlete and devoted family man whose greatest joy was being with his children and grandchildren, particularly if it involved ice cream or attending a sporting event. He was a sports enthusiast, especially enjoying hunting, football and tennis, and loved traveling with his family and friends.


In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jill L. Urey and husband Charles Ducker of York and Amy M. and husband Roy Mehl of Hummelstown; four grandchildren, Samuel Mehl, Jillian Ducker, Caroline Mehl, and Henry Ducker; and a sister, Vicki Snyder of El Paso, TX. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Urey; and a sister, Mary Jane Walker.

The Urey family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of SpiriTrust Lutheran The Village at Sprenkle Drive for their exceptional care and compassion for Russ during his stay at their facility.
