HUNTSVILLE, AL-Roy Gene Logston, 91, passed away peacefully in Huntsville, AL on February 20,2022 after a brief illness. He was born in Chester, West Virginia on September 20,1930 to Virgil Ernest and Amanda Nutter Logston. Roy graduated in 1953 from Otterbine University, Westerville, OH, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in mathematics and physics. After two years as a network engineer with a local TV station and two years of active duty in the military, he was employed by McDonnell Douglas (later Boeing Corporation) for the remainder of his work career. His engineering career started with work on the development of the Nike Zeus anti-missile program leading to engineering design and support management positions in NASA’s Saturn IB, Saturn V, Apollo and Skylab programs in the Huntsville area. In his retirement years, he served as an expert tour guide for the U.S. Space and Rocket Center museum. Roy was a kind, loving and generous man and will be missed by his family as well as a host of friends and the staff at Redstone Village Senior Living. He was a Christian and attended Farley Community Church. He loved music and sang in several church choirs in his younger days. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Staub Logston, who he married in 1962 in Las Vegas, NV; one son, Eric Lee Logston and five siblings. Roy is survived by sons, Mark Todd Logston of Salt Lake City, UT, Lee Randell Logston of Santa Fe, NM and Scott David Logston (Stephanie) of Las Cruces, NM; one sister, Mary Alice Chaponis (Peter) of Ocala, FL and fifteen nieces and nephews. Services were held Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home in Huntsville. A graveside service and interment beside his wife, Shirley, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at Paradise (Hotzlschwamm) Cemetery, Thomasville with Pastor Sigrid Hipkiss officiating.
