YORK – Robert F. “Bob” Lenz, 63, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 28, 2025 at his home.
Born on July 6, 1961, in Altoona, Bob was the son of R. Raymond Lenz of Cresson, PA, and the late Herlene (Muldoon) Lenz. He graduated from Penn State University in 1983 with a Bachelor's degree in Art, specializing in Photography. Bob had a distinguished career as a professional photographer, working at The York Newspaper Company throughout the 1980s and 1990s. His exceptional work earned him multiple awards, including Newsphoto of the Year and Picture of the Year from the Pennsylvania Press Photographers Association and the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association.
Beyond journalism, Bob was passionate about teaching photography. He served as an instructor at Penn State York's Project Connections, York College of PA, and York Suburban High School. He was also a Staff Photographer at York College until 2008. Additionally, he worked as a Studio Photographer at Failor's Photography Studio and ran his own commercial photography business. In 2018, Bob took on a new role as a production technician at Harley-Davidson. He was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Sons of the American Legion in Gallitzin, PA, and a life member of Lincoln Engine Co. #9 in York, where he also volunteered as a firefighter.
Bob found joy in "making photographs", camping, kayaking, fly-fishing, the outdoors, tending to his gardens, and anything related to music.
Bob loved his family fiercely and is survived by a daughter, Kara M. Lenz of Salt Lake City, UT; two sons, Nick J. Lenz of York; Travis J. and wife Sabrina Lenz of Lancaster; three grandchildren, Allison, Madelyn, and Clark; a brother, Patrick J. Lenz and his husband Arch Pelley of Dewey Beach, DE; his father, R.
