York—Robert E. Starner, 83, died Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Manor Care Health Services-South. He was the husband of the late Betty J. (Norris) Starner. A graveside tribute service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, January 8, 2009 at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in York, with Rev. Charles L. Persing of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dallastown, officiating. Family and friends wishing to attend should arrive at the cemetery by 1:45 p.m. Military honors will be provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York, is in charge of arrangements. Born August 31, 1925 in York, he was a son of the late John and Florence (Reynolds) Starner. He was employed by Columbia Gas Company, where he worked as a meter reader and electrician until his retirement in 1972. Mr. Starner was a United States Army veteran of World War II; he was also a member of the Girard and Yankee Athletic Association. He enjoyed trips to Atlantic City and fishing on the Susquehanna River. He was an accomplished handyman. He was well known for his sense of humor and brought laughter and smiles to many people. Mr. Starner is survived by four children, William J. "Jim" Starner and wife Deb of York Haven, Diana L. Boyer of York, Janice L. Wiley and husband George of York and Keith R. Starner and wife Donna of Hellam, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one brother, Kenneth V. Starner and wife Bonnie of Sterling, Va, one sister, Julia A. "Sue" Gilbert and husband Barry of Red Lion, sister-in-law, Viona "Vi" Starner of New Salem, brother-in-law, Wally Nunn of Lebanon, IL, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles A. and John J. "Jerry" Starner and three sisters, Dorothy "Dot" Nunn, Lois May Starner and Sandra Starner. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Salvation Army, 50 E. King St., York, Pa 17401.
