YORK - Robert D. Lewis, 79, died at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2008 at the York Lutheran Home. He was the husband of Mary A. (Grissinger) Lewis with whom he observed a 57th wedding anniversary on September 29, 2007. A Celebration of Life Service will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 29 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 W. Market St., York, with the Rev. Diane G. Wenthe and the Rev. Richard E. Jorgensen officiating. Burial with full military honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the church parlor. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Lewis was born March 18, 1928, in York. He was the son of the late William L. and Grace Edna (Fahs) Lewis. He retired in 1985 as a Quality Director with Hamilton Technology, Inc. after 25 years of service, and had previously worked with Bowens for 12 years. While with Bowens, he worked in Iran for two years and while with Hamilton, he worked in China. Following his retirement he was a part-time associate with Heffner Funeral Chapels & Crematory. Mr. Lewis was a 1946 graduate of William Penn Senior High School and upon graduation immediately entered the US Army where he served as a Sergeant in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He was a lifelong member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church where he served on numerous committees and groups. He had been a Sunday School teacher and served as the Sunday School Superintendent for many years. He had also been the President of Class #5. He was a 50-year member of the church choir and served on the church council multiple times. He was a Stephen's Minister and had assisted in establishing the Christ Care Committee at church. He had also been a volunteer with both York Hospice and Contact Tele Ministry. In addition to his wife, Mr. Lewis leaves his two daughters, Sandy Dressel and husband, Jeffrey of Dallastown, and Beth Lefever of York; three granddaughters, Amber Liebgott, Nicole Dressel and Jodie Lauber; four great grandchildren, Alison, Benjamin, Carson and Dillon; and nieces and nephews. A brother, Niles W. Lewis in 1994, preceded him in death. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 W. Market St., York, PA 17401 or the Alzheimer's Association, 3544 N. Progress Ave., Suite 205, Harrisburg, PA 17110 or the York Lutheran Home, 1801 Folkemer Circle, York, PA 17404.
