MANCHESTER – Richard Vernon Witmer, 88, passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at UPMC Memorial Hospital. He was the loving husband of Shirley R. (Crone) Witmer and the couple celebrated 69 years of marriage on March 20th.


A Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:00 PM on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc. 1551 Kenneth Road, York with Pastor Roy Stetler officiating. Prior to the service, there will be a visitation from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family with full military honors provided by the York County Veteran Honor Guard.


Born September 5, 1934 in York, Mr. Witmer was a son of the late Walter and Fairy (Crone) Witmer. Mr. Witmer was a 1952 graduate from Manchester High School, and in 1955 he joined the US Army and served our country. Mr. Witmer was involved with various organizations and clubs, including; the Hawks Club, Northern York County Fish and Game, Mount Wolf VFW Post 2439, and the Central League Baseball where he played and managed teams. In his free time, he could often be found hunting, golfing, rooting for the Dallas Cowboys, the Nittany Lions, or playing poker with his family.


In addition to his wife, Mr. Witmer is survived a son, Barry W. Witmer and his wife Barb; a daughter; Vicki L. Babner and her husband Michael; five grandchildren, Heather Witmer, Derek Witmer and his wife Holly, Jennifer Fox, Shawn Babner and his wife Renee, and Mathew Babner, 2 step-grandchildren, Joshua Darr and his wife Jen, and Jessica Darr; five great grandchildren, Kimberly and her husband Dan, Kaili, Jadyn, Brayden, and Miles; a Sister, Bonnie; his very good friends, Bob Taylor, Brad Chambers, and Al Jordan; his wonderfully helpful neighbors, Jimmy and Tara Schlosser; Bev and Delcie Boyd, Bev Botterbusch, and Ken and Joyce Heindle; and his beloved cats, Kimber and Tiger. In addition to his parents, Mr. Witmer is preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Witmer; and a sister, Gladys Heist.


In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to the York County SPCA 3159 N Susquehanna Trail, York, PA 17406.
