WELLSBURG, NY - Richard Lee Nichols, Age 84 of Sayre, PA passed away December 24, 2012 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Elmira NY. Richard was born January 7, 1928 in Athens, PA son of the late John and Susie (Harding) Nichols and was a graduate of Athens High School. Richard served his country in WW II serving both with the US Army and US Navy from 1946 to 1953. His memberships included VFW Post #1536 Sayre, PA and the American Legion Post #246 Athens, PA. He was retired from the US Postal Service working in the Binghamton, NY area for many years. Following retirement he worked as a security officer at Ingersoll Rand. Survivors include his wife Thelma I. (Talada) VanDuzer Nichols of Sayre, PA, stepdaughters, Dianna (Jack) Weber, Bonnie VanDuzer, Shirley (Richard Strachan, Jr.) VanDuzer, Leona (Dale) Chandler and Paula VanDuzer, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, a son-in-law, Raymond Ferboni and his canine friend Niki. Richard was predeceased by his parents and his two year old son, Kevin Nichols and a stepdaughter, Connie Ferboni. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Richards’s life on Sunday, December 30, 2012 at the Sayre VFW, 67 West Lockhart Street, Sayre, PA. Military Honors will be held at 3:00 PM followed by a time of remembrance until 5:00 PM. Memorials in his memory may be made to the Bradford County SPCA, US 220, Ulster, PA 18850, Stray Haven, 194 Shepard Road, Waverly, NY 14892 or to the Animal Sanctuary, P.O. Box A East Smithfield, PA. 18817. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts Funeral Home, Inc. 279 Main Street, Wellsburg, NY.
