RED LION – Richard E. “Howdy” Gilbert, 78, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Pleasant Acres Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Cheryl Ann (Mundis) Gilbert. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, September 22, 2014 at Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion with Rev. Keith Schmuck officiating. Viewings will be held from 6-8:00 PM Sunday and 9-10:00 AM Monday at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with full military rites provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Born April 10, 1936 in York a son of the late Philip and Violet (Barnhart) Gilbert, he retired from New Era Die after 28 years of service. In his younger years, Richard was active with Boy Scouts of America as a Scout Leader and Committee Chairman. Howdy enjoyed building and collecting model trains and was an overall handyman who could fix anything. Mr. Gilbert will be fondly remembered as a man who enjoyed spending his time lending a hand to anyone in need. He was a US Navy veteran. Mr. Gilbert is survived by a son, Bryan L. and wife Tabitha Gilbert of Red Lion; five daughters, Lisa A. Smith of York, Lori A. and husband Karl Heckman of East Prospect, Lana A. and husband Michael Marshall of Dallastown, Julie L. Gilbert of Dallastown, and Cheri M. and husband Steve Fulcher of Red Lion; ten grandchildren; one great grandson; his companion, Carol Ann Roseberry of Red Lion and her family; and a beloved kitty, “Sammie.” He was preceded in death by three sisters, Josephine Leber, Nina Kinard, and Betty Tyson. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Acres Auxiliary, 118 Pleasant Acres Rd., York, PA 17402.
