WRIGHTSVILLE Richard A. “Dick” Hickman, 68, of Long Level died Tuesday morning, March 4, 2014, at his home with his family by his side. He was the husband of Melinda L. “Mindy” Ritter-Hickman. Following cremation, friends are invited to visit with Dick’s family from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, 2014 in the Rotunda of Lauxmont Farms, 1215 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. A time for sharing memories to celebrate Dick’s life will begin at 3 pm in the Rotunda with Certified Celebrant Jessica Smith leading the time. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, York is in charge of arrangements. Dick was born March 12, 1945 in York. He was the son of the late George H. and Marion (Sipe) Hickman and was a 1963 graduate of William Penn Senior High School. He was a Tool & Die Maker and Machine Repairman by trade working at Caterpillar for 28 years until leaving in 1988. A passionate boater his entire life, Dick purchased Long Level Marina in 1989 and oversaw its operation until the time of his passing. He was an active member of the Philadelphia, Sunnyland, FL and Chesapeake Bay Chapters of the Antique & Classic Boat Society and was well known for his meticulous attention to detail in restoring classic boats. His efforts were recognized by receiving 1st Place and Best in Show awards at classic boat competitions. Dick restored a total of six classic boats and handmade a model replica of each upon completion. He was a member of Lake Clarke Rescue for 15 years and served as Commodore from 1985 to 1990. Dick was also an avid scuba diver and enjoyed underwater photography. In addition to his wife, Dick is survived by his son, William Ray Hickman and wife, Cheryl of York; two grandchildren, Candis Dodson and husband, Hugh and Brandon Hickman; a great granddaughter, Akasha; three brothers, George Hickman of York, Dale Hickman of Rock Hall, SC and James Hickman of Wrightsville; and a sister, Joyce Rivers of Honeye Falls, NY. He was preceded in death by a brother, Don Hickman and a sister, Lucille Shea. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Brain Tumor Association, 8550 W.
