YORK- Phyllis N. Hagginbothom died peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Born in York on February 12, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Edward G. and Esther May (Straw) Brownwell of Abbottstown, PA. Phyllis was a 1947 graduate of William Penn York High where she played on the girls basketball team. Her marriage to Earl R. Hagginbothom occurred on June 14, 1947 the Saturday following her graduation. A memorial service celebrating her life will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 14th at First Church of the Brethren , 2710 Kingston Road , York , PA. Officiating will be Rev. Helen Osborne, a former Minister of Visitation of that congregation. Visitation with the family will begin at 1 p.m. and there will be a time of food and fellowship following the service. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York is in charge of arrangements. Phyllis was a member of the First Church of the Brethren where she served on the Church Board, with the Deacons and on the Kitchen Committee. She was active in the Homebuilders Sunday School class. Phyllis was especially proud of their fund-raising efforts to “build an ark” for Heifer International. In her earlier years she taught in the children’s Sunday School and was a Girl Scout leader. Her life centered on her family and her church. She enjoyed traveling and camping with her husband. Sometimes they were accompanied by their grandchildren on trips to the shore or out West. On their travels there were occasions when they picked up a hitchhiker along the road. Phyllis had a sharp wit and enjoyed telling jokes and pulling pranks on others. She was a great cook, known for her shoo-fly pies. Phyllis was a loyal and caring friend, wife, mother and grandmother. Phyllis was employed for forty years at Miller Plant Farms, at Chas. Schaeffer Florist (Downtown) and most recently at Fitzkee’s Candies, Spry. Mrs. Hagginbothom is survived by two daughters, Rev. Nancy M. Jones and her husband Stephen D. Jones and Lynn M. Kinner all of York ; three grandchildren, Eric M. Jones and his wife Rachel of Davie, Florida, Sarah M. Kennedy and her husband Jesse of Spring Grove, and Benjamin S. Kinner of York, two great-granddaughters Alexis and Taylor Jones, and several nieces. She was preceded in death by brothers Melvin, Bernard “Pink”, Fred and George Brownwell. Her sister Catherine “Kitty” Whiteman also preceded her in death. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 2449 South Queen St., York , PA 17402 or to Heifer International, 1 World Ave. , Little Rock , AR 72202 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.
