Philip S. Golden

RED LION – Philip S. Golden, 86, passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Patricia L. (Spangler) Golden with whom he would have shared 65 years of marriage on November 1, 2017. He owned and operated Philip S. Golden Memorials for 37 years. He was an artisan in wood and stone and there are many of his works of art throughout south-central Pennsylvania. Born August 5, 1931 in Hanover, the son of the late Beulah E. (Miller) Golden and Paul S. Golden, Sr., he was a 1949 graduate of Red Lion Area High School and later attended Penn State York. Phil was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War where he earned a Bronze Star. He became a lifetime member of Red Lion American Legion Post 543 and served on the York County Veterans Honor Guard. In the Red Lion community, Phil was a past member of the Jaycees and a current member of the Lions Club. He was honored by the Lions Club International Foundation when he was named the Melvin Jones Fellow for dedicated humanitarian services. Mr. Golden was elected to the Red Lion Borough Council for 2 terms. He served on the borough’s Shade Tree Commission and also served 23 years on the Red Lion Recreation Commission. In 1988, he was the recipient of the Catherine Meyer Award from the Red Lion Borough Council. Phil was past president of the Red Lion Cemetery Association and past member of the Monument Builders of Pennsylvania; Mid-Atlantic Monument Builders; American Institute of Commemorative Art; and Monument Builders of North America. Mr. Golden was a life member of Grace Lutheran Church in Red Lion where he served on the Church Council and the Property Committee. He also served as Usher and Sexton. When physically active, Phil enjoyed playing tennis in the Red Lion Recreation League and also golfing. Later in life he loved to carve decoys and complete puzzles. In addition to his wife, Mr. Golden is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Golden of Red Lion, Connie Norman of Lawrenceville, GA and Carol and husband Ronald Ghiradella of Williamsburg, VA; two sons, Craig Golden and Chris and wife Doris Golden both of Red Lion; eight grandchildren, Katelyn Norman, Keith Golden, Rachele and Nicholas Ghiradella, Jennifer and Jaclyn Golden, Bobbi Jo Hollingshead and Billie Jo Clemente; and three brothers, Ronald M. Golden of Red Lion, Larry R. Golden of Dover and Gerard A. Golden of Bethlehem. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jon R. Norman; and siblings, Jeune E. Miller, Doris M. Workinger, Paul S. Golden, Jr. and Jay D. Golden. A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, October 30, 2017 at Grace Lutheran Church, 220 N. Charles Street, Red Lion with his pastor, the Reverend Courtney Erzkus officiating. A visitation will be held from 1-2:00 PM Monday at the Church. Full military honors will be presented by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Private burial will be in Red Lion Cemetery. Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 220 N. Charles St., Red Lion, PA 17356.
