West Pittston - Patricia J. Smith, of West Pittston, passed away on October 11, 2009, in Hospice of the VNA, Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre. Born in the Bronx, she was a daughter of the late Patrick J.A. and Anita M. (Ruehl) Cotter. After graduating from Walton High School in the Bronx, Pat attended Bellvue Nursing School and worked as a registered psychiatric nurse. Pat is survived by her loving husband, Jerry; beloved daughters Katherine Lyon-Haynes and Virginia Lyon; most precious granddaughter Maya Patricia and son-in-law Chris Haynes. Pat also enjoyed a wonderful and loving relationship with her sisters Kathleen Schelhammer; Anne Gurr and her husband Chuck; her brother Patrick and his wife Katherine. Pat wanted to specifically acknowledge her nephew, John Gurr, for his many thoughtful gestures and his kind heart and her niece, Barbara Gurr-Nimms, whose sense of humor and wonderfully thoughtful gifts were appreciated. Pat is also survived by her niece, Jennifer Wornat, and nephews, Stephen Gurr and George Lampl. Also surviving are two dear friends, Pat Campbell and Mary Lou McBride, as well as her in-laws, Jackie and Frank Smith, who became special friends. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 17, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, Pittston. Family and friends are invited to visit the family home on York Avenue, West Pittston on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday following the Mass. The Family requests that flowers be omitted and donations in Pat's name be made to Medical Oncology Associates Pharmacy Fund, 382 Pierce St., Kingston, PA 18704. Arrangements are entrusted to Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 728 Main Street, Avoca.
