Norman Lamar 'Bud' Emery

Norman LaMar 'Bud' Emery, 92, a native of Pottsville, passed away Tuesday at Schuylkill Center. He was a son of the late Norman H. and Ruth Pflueger Emery. He was the husband of Dorothy 'Dot' Butts Emery for 54 1/2 years when she passed in December 1996. He was preceded in death by a son, LaMar W. Emery; a sister, Grace Steimling; and a brother, Warren. Surviving are a son, Robert and his wife, Donna, Minersville; a daughter, Donna R. Emery and her friends, Betsy Conway and Jessica Moyer, Schuylkill Haven; a grandson, Jason and his wife, Angie, Auburn; a granddaughter, Jodi and her husband, Carsten Schluter, New Jersey; great-grandchildren, Kelsey Emery, Florian and Gabriella Schluter and Jerry Beach; cousins, nieces and nephews. Norman was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Pottsville. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 129 and Pottsville Joint Veterans Council, where he served as treasurer of both until he died. Norman was a life member of American Veteran Post 180, American Legion Post 67 and the Chapel of the Four Chaplains. During World War II, Norman served with the Army during the Battle of the Bulge. He held the rank of E7 master sergeant. Norman received the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, an American Campaign Medal along with the European, African and Middle Eastern Campaign Medals. He was awarded 3 Bronze Stars and a World War II Victory Medal. For 26 years, Norman led a Memorial Day program for the students of John S. Clarke Elementary Center. In 1992, he received an award from the school for that program. In 1997, Norman was honored with a distinguished service award from the City of Pottsville. In 2010, he was presented with a proclamation from the Schuylkill County Commissioners for his dedication as chairman of the VFW's Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy essay contests. Norman was instrumental in getting Gen. George A. Joulwan to return to Pottsville in 1995. He acted as the liaison to dedicate the East Side Park in the general's name. He also implemented the raising of the flag for deceased veterans in Garfield Square. Norman also helped organize the Anthracite Bowl football games. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Centre Street and Howard Avenue, Pottsville. The Rev. James Rinehart will officiate. Family and friends may call from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will take place at 2:30 p.m. at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 Centre St., Pottsville PA 17901. Schlitzer-Allen-Pugh Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
