Nathalie M. (Roth) Engdahl

York—Nathalie M. (Roth) Engdahl, 99, died Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the York Lutheran Nursing & Rehabilitation Center-Sprenkle Drive. She was the wife of the late James F. Engdahl, her high school sweetheart, to whom she was married for 66 years. Mrs. Engdahl was born June 7, 1915 in York, a daughter of the late Jacob H. and Margaret (Bohle) Roth. She was a 1933 graduate of William Penn Senior High School, York. Nathalie was a lifelong artist, with great influence on the advancement of the York art community. She had eighteen solo exhibitions of her paintings, and participated in many invitational and group shows in the region. Her works are in the collections of Penn State York Campus, York College of Pennsylvania, Lebanon Valley College and many other public and private collections. Nathalie traveled extensively worldwide and in the U.S. with her husband and family, always taking the less traveled roads to be close to nature, which she reflected in her paintings. Her love of life, nature and positive attitude influenced and inspired all who knew her. Nathalie and Jim restored and lived in a 1786 farmhouse, Stillmeadow Farm, travelling frequently to Williamsburg, VA to study period style to insure their restoration was authentic. Stillmeadow Farm became the location of many gatherings of family and friends over the 35 years she lived there. She was a very active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in York. She painted the mural 'Implantation' which hangs in the gathering space of St. Matthew. She was a member of YorkArts, the York Chapter of American Pen Women, and the York Art Association. She is also the author of four books, Family Memories, a touching chronicle of her ancestry, life and family; The Engdahl Odyssey, a detailed account of the more than 50 separate family motor trips throughout North America; Favorite Recipes from the Farm, a family album of “good eats” suggestions; and Remembering Grandpa Jim, completed upon Jim’s death as a memorial for family and friends. Mrs. Engdahl is survived by three sons, Lee F. Engdahl and his wife, Carolyn of Hingham, MA, David L. Engdahl of Jacksonville, FL and Terry K. Engdahl and his wife, Sharon of Marysville; one daughter, Ellen E. Ehlenbeck and her husband, Robert of York; 13 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Kermit and Kenneth Roth and two sisters, Doris Altland and Madalyn Snellbaker. A Celebration of Life Service will be 11 AM, Saturday, December 27, 2014 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 W. Market Street, York. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Her pastor, the Rev. Kevin T. Shively will officiate. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York is in charge of arrangements.
