York--On Tuesday, June 19, 2018, Miriam R. (Fultz) Burns, 91 died peacefully in her sleep at The Haven Assisted Living Community in York, PA. Miriam was born on July 30, 1926 to Caleb Stanley Fultz and Clara Ethel (Stuckey) Fultz in Lewistown, PA. She was the youngest of four children. Miriam graduated from Coatesville High School in 1943. Miriam moved to Lancaster, PA and went to work at the Hamilton Watch Company and lived at the YWCA. While an employee at Hamilton Watch, she met Tom Burns who was a student at Lancaster Theological Seminary. They were married on October 27, 1945. Following his ordination into the United Church of Christ, Miriam played a very active and supportive role in the various churches that Tom pastored. Above all things Miriam was the devoted mother of five children Thomas, Kathleen, Susan, Phyllis, and Roberta. In 1965 she went to work outside the home as the Film Librarian of the York County Council of Churches. She also served faithfully as the Administrative Assistant to several Conference of Churches executives. She retired from this position in 1988. Miriam’s civic and church activities were many and varied usually revolving around the needs of a growing and active family. She was active as a Scout leader and in many church groups in various capacities. In her retirement she became active in the Path Valley Lions club and assisted with numerous projects. She also enjoyed her retirement home in Florida where she and her husband volunteered at the Tampa Bay Fair for over 15 years. Miriam was an avid traveler who enjoyed visits to almost every part of the United States. Miriam leaves five children, Tom and his wife, Robyn Fountain, Kathleen and her husband, Michael Bougher, Susan and her husband, Kip Markey, Phyllis and her husband Robin Shaeffer, and Roberta and her husband Stephen Smith. She was the proud grandmother of nine, and great grandmother of 18. Miriam was preceded in death by a grandson Jonathan L. Shaeffer, and two brothers, Lawrence and Richard, and a sister, Isabelle, and two nieces, Elaine and Carla. She is also preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 70 years, Reverend Thomas M. Burns Jr. The family wish to thank the staff at The Haven and Hospice & Community Care for the wonderful care that was given, and to Pastor David Tietje from St. John’s UCC for all the visits, communion and prayers these last few months of her life. A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held at 11 a.m. on June 28, 2018 at St. John’s UCC, 161 North Main Street, Red Lion, with her Pastor, The Reverend David D. Tietje, officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. A luncheon will follow the service in the church’s fellowship hall. Inurnment will be held at 11 a.m. June 29, 2018 in Harbaugh Cemetery, 14125 Harbaugh Church Road, Waynesboro, PA 17268. Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion is in charge of arrangements.
