Milton E. "Sonny" Burns, Jr.

YORK – Milton E. “Sonny” Burns, Jr., 88, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2023 at York South Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Gertrude M. (Markley) Burns.


A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion with Pastor Larry Parlett officiating. A visitation will be held from 9-10:00 AM Saturday at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with full military rites provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard.


Born April 14, 1934 in Yoe, a son of the late Kathryn V. (Miller) and Milton E. Burns, Sr.; he was a 1953 graduate of Red Lion Area High School. Mr. Burns retired from Caterpillar, Inc. after 39 years of service. He was a member of UAW Local 786, an avid bowler, woodworker, and NASCAR fan of Dale Earnhardt. Sonny was a lifetime member at Bethany United Methodist Church in Red Lion where he was active with the Promise Keepers. He also enjoyed volunteering at Red Lion Senior Center and Helping Hands for the Homeless. Milton was also a veteran of the US Army.


Mr. Burns is survived by a son, Robert M. Burns of York; a daughter, Kimberly A. and husband Todd Yingling of Freeland, MD; two grandchildren, Sarah Fling and Duane L. Burns, II; two sisters, Roberta Zimmerman of York and Kathryn Snyder of Red Lion; a daughter-in-law, Vicky Burns of Dallastown; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Duane L. Burns.
