Michael Joseph Vahey, Jr. (Mike) of Stewartstown, PA passed at the age of 82 in York, PA on September 10, 2022. He was born on September 26, 1939 in Wilmington, DE to Irish immigrants, Michael Joseph Vahey and Francis Haggerty Vahey. He was a graduate of Salesianum High School in Wilmington, DE in 1957 where he also lettered in football. He then joined the Delaware Air National Guard and later graduated from East Carolina University as the Vice President of Phi Sigma Pi Honors Fraternity. He paid his way through college by working as a DJ for the college’s radio station as well as waiting tables. Michael married his college sweetheart, Betsy Carol Winstead of Momeyer, NC in 1964. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on June 20, 2022. The couple eventually settled in Forest Hill, MD with their 3 children. He worked 38 years for General Motors where he began as an accountant and moved up to Superintendent of Production and Manufacturing and was known for his strong work ethic and problem-solving skills. His career took him from Wilmington, Delaware to Detroit, Michigan, Kansas City, Missouri, and finally to the Baltimore, Maryland plant from which he retired in 2000. Soon afterwards, Michael and Betsy moved to their retirement home in Stewartstown, PA.

Michael had a fulfilling and active retirement life. He served as a volunteer Fire Police at the Eureka Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company in Stewartstown, PA. He was especially passionate about flying and earned his FAA Private Pilot’s License in the early 1980s. A lifetime lover of hunting, he spent many weekends with his brothers at their hunting cabin in the PA mountains near State College. Later in life, he taught gun safety and hunter safety classes in PA. Like his father, he was an avid fan of Notre Dame football. Michael was a lector for 30 years at St. Mark Catholic Church in Fallston, MD and with his wife Betsy, was a member of St. Mark’s dinner group where they were coordinators for several years. Finally, his love of gardening led him to achieve a certificate as a Master Gardener.

Along with his wife Betsy, he leaves a son, Michael J. Vahey III and his wife Kathleen Major Vahey; two daughters, Kelly M. Vahey and her husband, Kevin Edwards, and Karen Vahey Baroody; five grandchildren; 2 brothers, Brian Vahey and Robert Vahey; and several nieces and nephews.
