Maxine L. (Oberdick) Hill

Maxine Lee “Tootie” Hill, of Shiloh, died Tuesday evening, November 8, 2016, ending an unexpected but short battle with cancer. She was 88. She was the wife of the late J. Ross Hill, who passed suddenly at the age of 52 in 1977, and was the long-time friend of Carl Shaffer of the York New Salem area. She was very proud of her work history, having retired in February after 20 years at the Big Lots store in West York. She retired in 1990 from Federal Paper Board, formerly Keystone Paper Box Company, in West York, where she had worked as a printer from the age of 16. Her friends and family remember her as lively and warm-hearted. She was the life of any gathering, with her life stories and her (often earthy) jokes. She was a champion of justice and fairness. She was from a mold broken long ago. The daughter of the late Arthur “Otz” Oberdick and Elsie Keener, she was raised during the Great Depression with nine brothers and sisters in York City. Her last surviving sibling, Helen Hykes of the Zion View area, died last month at the age of 94. She is survived by a son, James R. Hill with his wife Wendy of Airville; three grandchildren, Tom Hill with his wife Marissa of Dallastown, Ross Hill with his wife Jenna of Temple, PA and Erin Gnidziejko-Smith with her husband Michael of Staunton, VA; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Saturday, December 3, beginning at 12:30 pm with a Celebration of Life Tribute Service at 1:30 pm at Heffner Funeral Chapel, 1551 Kenneth Rd, York, PA 17408. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Misericordia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 998 S Russell St, York, PA 17402, or Hospice & Community Care, 224 St. Charles Way, York, PA 17402.
