YORK- Maurice M. Kerchner, 89, died on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Manor Care North. He was the husband of Sara A. (Urey) Kerchner. The couple had been married for 64 years. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Providence Presbyterian Church, 1215 Church Rd., York, PA 17404 with Pastor Darryl MacPherson officiating. A viewing will be from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Born on June 27, 1925 in York, he was a son of the late Monroe L. and Margaret E. (Resh) Kerchner. Maurice was a 1943 graduate of York High School. He worked for 35 years as a telephone sales representative for Fulton, Mehring and Hauser Co., Inc. until his retirement in 1987. After retirement, Maurice distributed Cars by Dealers magazines for 14 years. Mr. Kerchner served our country in the United States Army during WWII and the Korean War. He was drafted in 1943 and was stationed in Hawaii. Maurice was one of the first waves into Letye Island in the Philippines. After being in the reserves for four years, he was called back to active duty in September of 1950 and was part of the 325th Quarter Battalion. Mr. Kerchner was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church and a former member of Calvary Presbyterian Church for 32 years, where he served as an Elder and a Deacon. He was a member of the choir at both churches. Maurice enjoyed picnics with his family and being outside. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Along with his wife, Sara, Maurice is survived by two sons, Alan C. Kerchner and his wife, Joan E. of Glen Rock and David Kerchner and his fiancé, Susan Mason of Wrightsville; two daughters, Arlene M. Harman and her husband, Bradley of York and Sonia Miller and her companion, Philip List of Glen Rock; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond L. and Morgan D. Kerchner. Memorial contributions may be made to the York Rescue Mission, 367 W. Market St., York, PA 17401 or the Salvation Army, 50 E. King St., York, PA 17401.
