MANCHESTER- Matthew Lee Hanes, 24, passed away Friday, August 7, 2015 at York Hospital. A Celebration of Life tribute service will be held at 1 PM on Friday, August 14, 2015 at Memorial Hall West at the York County Fairgrounds, 334 Carlisle Avenue, York, with Certified Life Celebrant Betty Frey officiating. A viewing will be held from 9 AM- 1 PM prior to the service. Burial will be in Mt. Rose Cemetery with full military honors by the Pennsylvania National Guard Military Funeral Honors Program and Vet 21 Solute Honor Guard. The Patriot Guard Riders PA Veterans Liaison East will also be present to honor Matthew for his service. Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York is in charge of arrangements. Matthew served his country in the United States Army; 1st Platoon, Charlie “Chainsaw” Troop, 4th Squadron, 73rd Calvary Regiment, 82nd Airborne during Operation Enduring Freedom. Born in York on June 27, 1991, Matthew was the son of the late Lee A. Hanes and Christine A. (Staley) Hanes of Manchester. He was an honorary member of the Warrior Brotherhood Veterans Motorcycle Club. Matthew was a military history major, and avid gun collector and an enthusiast of books, music and movies. In addition to his mother, Mr. Hanes is survived by two sisters, Michelle Overmiller and her husband Daniel of York, and Alysia Harpster and her husband Geoffrey of Lancaster; paternal grandmother, Arlene J. Swope of York; maternal grandparents, David and Maureen Staley of York; Uncles, Lindsay Staley and his wife Carol of Manchester, and James Staley of Spring Garden; nephews, Owen and Izaya Overmiller; niece, Addison Overmiller; and caregiver and friend Jennifer Munck of York. Along with his father, Lee, Matthew was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Kenneth Hanes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Warrior Brotherhood Veterans Motorcycle Club, 3 Orchard Hill Drive, Duncannon, PA 17020, which is setting up a scholarship fund in Matthew’s name.
