Mr. Matilal Chunilal Desai of York quietly passed away on January 20, 2016 at Normandie Ridge Rehab Center. Mr. Desai was born in India on August 22, 1922 and was deeply involved in India’s freedom movement from the British rule. As a freedom fighter, he served two years in British prisons. In 1972, the government of India awarded him a prestigious Freedom Fighter award and a life-time pension in recognition for his contributions in helping India achieve its independence on August 15, 1947. Mr. Desai has committed 100% of the pension he received towards several well established charities in India that are devoted to providing corrective treatment to physically challenged, medicines to ill, food to hungry, ration to poor, education to the uneducated, and shelter to orphaned. Mr. Desai migrated to the US in 1975 to create a better life for his children. He is survived by his wife Kanta Desai, with whom he celebrated 60 years in marriage last year. He is also survived by 7 children, 13 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. The viewing and cremation service will be held at 5:00 PM on Friday, January 22, 2016 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York.
