Mary Margaret Martin

YORK – Mary Margaret (Kirkpatrick) Martin, 97, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at York Hospital on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. Mary was the wife of the late George W. Martin who died on April 26, 1984. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at 1:00 PM at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 950 W. Market Street, York with her Priest, The Rev. Dominic Azagbor, OP officiating. A viewing will precede the Mass from 12:00 to 1:00 PM on Tuesday at St. Rose’s. Burial will be in Holy Saviour Cemetery. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Martin was born on May 30, 1923 in Tyrone, Blair County, daughter of the late Walter Wade Kirkpatrick and Mary Sullivan (Carling) Kirkpatrick. She graduated from nursing school at Pittsburgh Hospital first working as a nurse at York Hospital and then as a nurse for local doctors. In later years, Mrs. Martin served as a private duty nurse until her retirement. Mrs. Martin was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening and took extra pride in her tomato plants each year. Mrs. Martin is survived by two sons, Russell J. Martin of Belle Vernon, PA and David G. and wife Barbara Murray Martin of Springfield, VA. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her son, Thomas J. “Tommy” Martin of York, PA. Mrs. Martin is survived by three grandchildren, Samantha J. Martin of Belle Vernon, Laura (Martin) and husband Stephen Sweeney of Alexandria, VA, and Gregory D. Martin of Alexandria, and her beloved great-grandson, William Sweeney of Alexandria. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her sister, Eleanor Cox of Tyrone, PA.
